Christmas Lights Around San Antonio
This is a list of various places around San Antonio that have major displays of Christmas lights. Got more for me to add? Email me at jwrider [[at]] gmail [[dot]] com!
(Note to photographers: to photograph these events at night, I'd recommend a camera with manual settings as well as a tripod. The tripod can double as a bat to fight off attackers as well. Happy holidays!)
1. The Schitterbahn's Hill Country Christmas probably the biggest and the best display around San Antonio. Turn down your computer volume before you visit their website. Tickets are $18 a person, which is kind of expensive. Here's a map. We visited the site last year, and ... probably won't go back this year. It was awfully crowded and expensive, and during our visit the weather was quite cold. I took a few photos, which you can see here.
2. The Village of Bulverde will hold their annual Christmas lighting on November 27th. Here's a snippet of an article from mysa.com describing it.
"On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving, thousands of local citizens will gather in the Village of Bulverde for the 19th Annual Christmas Lighting. This year, the lighting display has been donated by H-E-B, The Home Depot, Broadway Bank, and Jess and Leslie Shurbet. From 5 to 9 p.m., free goodies and activities will be provided to children throughout the village. Village merchants will be offering a variety of fun, from cookie decorating to ornament-making, as well treats such as hot chocolate and hot dogs."
3. One of the biggest holiday events in San Antonio is the River Parade, which starts at 7pm on November 27th. It is a massive parade of floats. The lights will stay up through January 1st. From their website: "The lighting ceremony is the official kickoff to the Paseo Del Rio Holiday Festivities. Tickets are sold through the Paseo Del Rio Association at (210) 227-4262. For over 20 years, the spectacular one-hour parade along San Antonio's River Walk features decorated, illuminated floats with celebrities, bands and lavishly-costumed participants. Over 150,000 people will gather along the River Walk to watch the spectacle live along the parade route. Millions more will join in the fun watching the television broadcast. Reserved seating is available along the parade route."
4. FORD Fiesta de las Luminarias, 12/4/2009 - 12/20/2009.
See the original announcement here. "Experience the Holiday serenity of the River Walk as you stroll along the lush banks of the San Antonio River guided by more than 6,000 luminarias. Warmly glowing candles in sand filled bags line the walkways to symbolically mark the "lighting of the way" for Holy Family. This centuries old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday & Sunday only."
5. Holiday Arts & Crafts Show. 12/11/2009 - 12/13/2009.
See the original announcement here.
A perfect setting for unique holiday shopping-the banks of the San Antonio River Walk. Local and regional artists, craftsmen, and jewelers offer holiday gift items for that special someone. Located along the River Walk Extension near the Chamber of Commerce, this Arts & Crafts Show displays some of the most unique hand made merchandise available anywhere. Whether it's jewelry, pottery or fine art you are interested in, you can finalize your holiday shopping. Enjoy a stroll along the picturesque River Walk, stop to talk to our vendors who are anxious to share information about their craft, and take home an item that will enhance your home, wardrobe or garden. When: 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Where: The River Walk.

Nice review of a few photo exhibits
FotoSeptiembreUSA, the annual month-long celebration of all things aperture organized and curated by SA’s own Michael Mehl, causes both excitement and dread each year: Yes, there will be a few exceptional art shows, but many spaces will resort to showing pedestrian photojournalism, which as brilliant as it can be, isn’t art. So September can feel like an art diet if you love contemporary work. It’s not Mehl’s fault; he can’t curate everything, and fortunately he has some capable participants at the Southwest School of Art & Craft and at the UTSA Satellite Space (this is not a definitive list; put down the pitchforks, folks).

SAMA Announces Judges and Special Prize for Inaugural Flickr Photography Contest
Museum hosting photographs of new Riverwalk extension
San Antonio – The San Antonio Museum of Art launched a new online community project on June 1 in honor of the opening of the Museum Reach: a photo contest to document the Reach over the summer, using the popular online photo community Flickr. In six short weeks, more than 1,000 entries have been submitted and almost 100 photographers have joined the Flickr group. The contest has been so popular the submission date has been extended to this Sunday, July 19.
After the contest closes, judges David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at SAMA; Mike Adkisson, Art and Architecture Project Manager at the San Antonio River Foundation; and Trish Simonite, photographer and associate professor of art history at Trinity University; will choose 12 photographs from the submissions. The San Antonio Museum of Art will showcase this work in a special exhibition on display Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, 2009.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic response from the community for both SAMA’s River Landing and the Museum Reach overall. The Flickr contest has been so successful we are already developing the next one, inspired by our upcoming exhibition Culinary Delights, focused on the photography of David Halliday,” said Emily Jones, Deputy Director of the Museum.
For more details, become a fan of SAMA on Facebook. For a complete calendar listing of public exhibitions, lectures and other special events open to the public, visit SAMA’s Web site at www.samuseum.org
