Great turnout! If I didn't get to meet you I'll catch you next time. It was nice to see so many new faces. I managed to finish just as the 50 mph winds blew in.

It's funny how you can meet up with a bunch of strangers and feel an instant rapport. Put March 13 and Luminaria on your calendar. This is a great event and it's free.

Evangeline,

First of all - welcome! Usually, we select a place to meet and introduce ourselves and chat for awhile. The topic is usually cameras - go figure. Then we'll head out on our photo walk. This is when the group usually strings out. Some people are quick photographers and some like to linger.

It is a great way to meet people with a common interest for photography. People of all ages are in the group. I hope you will join us.

Christmas Lights Around San Antonio

Howdy!

This is a list of various places around San Antonio that have major displays of Christmas lights. Got more for me to add? Email me at jwrider [[at]] gmail [[dot]] com!

(Note to photographers: to photograph these events at night, I'd recommend a camera with manual settings as well as a tripod. The tripod can double as a bat to fight off attackers as well. Happy holidays!)

1. The Schitterbahn's Hill Country Christmas probably the biggest and the best display around San Antonio. Turn down your computer volume before you visit their website. Tickets are $18 a person, which is kind of expensive. Here's a map. We visited the site last year, and ... probably won't go back this year. It was awfully crowded and expensive, and during our visit the weather was quite cold. I took a few photos, which you can see here.

2. The Village of Bulverde will hold their annual Christmas lighting on November 27th. Here's a snippet of an article from mysa.com describing it.

"On the Friday evening after Thanksgiving, thousands of local citizens will gather in the Village of Bulverde for the 19th Annual Christmas Lighting. This year, the lighting display has been donated by H-E-B, The Home Depot, Broadway Bank, and Jess and Leslie Shurbet. From 5 to 9 p.m., free goodies and activities will be provided to children throughout the village. Village merchants will be offering a variety of fun, from cookie decorating to ornament-making, as well treats such as hot chocolate and hot dogs."

3. One of the biggest holiday events in San Antonio is the River Parade, which starts at 7pm on November 27th. It is a massive parade of floats. The lights will stay up through January 1st. From their website: "The lighting ceremony is the official kickoff to the Paseo Del Rio Holiday Festivities. Tickets are sold through the Paseo Del Rio Association at (210) 227-4262. For over 20 years, the spectacular one-hour parade along San Antonio's River Walk features decorated, illuminated floats with celebrities, bands and lavishly-costumed participants. Over 150,000 people will gather along the River Walk to watch the spectacle live along the parade route. Millions more will join in the fun watching the television broadcast. Reserved seating is available along the parade route."

4. FORD Fiesta de las Luminarias, 12/4/2009 - 12/20/2009.
See the original announcement here. "Experience the Holiday serenity of the River Walk as you stroll along the lush banks of the San Antonio River guided by more than 6,000 luminarias. Warmly glowing candles in sand filled bags line the walkways to symbolically mark the "lighting of the way" for Holy Family. This centuries old tradition begins at dusk Friday, Saturday & Sunday only."

5. Holiday Arts & Crafts Show. 12/11/2009 - 12/13/2009.
See the original announcement here.
A perfect setting for unique holiday shopping-the banks of the San Antonio River Walk. Local and regional artists, craftsmen, and jewelers offer holiday gift items for that special someone. Located along the River Walk Extension near the Chamber of Commerce, this Arts & Crafts Show displays some of the most unique hand made merchandise available anywhere. Whether it's jewelry, pottery or fine art you are interested in, you can finalize your holiday shopping. Enjoy a stroll along the picturesque River Walk, stop to talk to our vendors who are anxious to share information about their craft, and take home an item that will enhance your home, wardrobe or garden. When: 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. Where: The River Walk.

Chalk It Up!

This year's event takes place on Saturday, October 10, 2009, from 10am-5pm, in downtown San Antonio, along part of Houston Street.

Quote from artpace.org: "Families, artists, and art lovers-save the date! Artpace's 6th annual Chalk It Up festival is a full day of viewing and creating chalk art. This year's festivities feature thirty-five artists, forty youth groups and organizations, Kidzone activities, and a colossal public mural. Free admission."

Nice review of a few photo exhibits

On http://www.sacurrent.com/arts/story.asp?id=70548, you'll find the rest of this review.

FotoSeptiembreUSA, the annual month-long celebration of all things aperture organized and curated by SA’s own Michael Mehl, causes both excitement and dread each year: Yes, there will be a few exceptional art shows, but many spaces will resort to showing pedestrian photojournalism, which as brilliant as it can be, isn’t art. So September can feel like an art diet if you love contemporary work. It’s not Mehl’s fault; he can’t curate everything, and fortunately he has some capable participants at the Southwest School of Art & Craft and at the UTSA Satellite Space (this is not a definitive list; put down the pitchforks, folks).

San Antonio Museum of Art announces Photo Contest winners

view profile

San Antonio Museum of Art is a group administrator San Antonio Museum of Art Pro User says:

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Museum Reach Flickr contest. We were overwhelmed with the enthusiasm and number of entries. This is our very first Flickr contest, but it won’t be the last – we appreciate everyone’s comments and the opportunity to learn and refine the contest experience.

Thanks also to our esteemed judges: David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at SAMA; Mike Adkisson, Art and Architecture Project Manager at the San Antonio River Foundation; and Trish Simonite, photographer and associate professor of art history at Trinity University. Among them, they chose nearly 80 images they deemed their favorites. It made it extremely difficult to narrow this list down to only 12. Eleven winners are listed. The final winning photographer could not be reached in time to participate in the exhibition of work.

The winning entries for the 2009 Museum Reach Flickr Contest are:

Keith Alan K.
Alamo Mills Dam

Thomas Cummins
SAMA and Riverwalk Levee Sunrise

James D. Ramos
Aqua Starry Night

Susan Eisenbrey
Suspension School

Irene Neno Diaz
Caught in the Middle

Abe Novy
Pearl Springs: The New Vintage

Gary O. Smith
SA Riverwalk Adventure: An Amazing Gaze

Susan Q. Jennings
Distorted River Reflection

Jim Rider
Stone Staircase

Daniel Rodriguez
Night-Heron Fishing

Jennifer Siu-Rivera
Yin \ Yan

Our next Flickr contest is scheduled for the end of the year, and will celebrate our FotoSeptiembre exhibition Culinary Delights. As you can imagine, this Flickr contest will focus on the photography of food. Keep coming by SAMA’s Flickr and Facebook pages for more details. We hope to see your work again!

Thanks everyone for your kind words and suggestions!

AndYaDontStop - We'd love to have had 12 winners, truly. But we had a bit of a timing issue to deal with. We needed all of the winners to provide highest res digitals in time to send the images to be professionally printed in line with our exhbition staff schedule (which is really packed!). One of our three judges is in Europe right now and we felt like it wouldn't be fair to have the other two judges alone choose the runner-up. Hope that helps!

Participating in the SAMA Museum Reach flickr photo event has been really exciting and fun and it still is. I have been back photo hunting the RiverWalk and downtown many times since the competition closed. I'm a native of
San Antonio and I love to bike around our city looking for new sights to shoot.

I feel a special honor in having one of my photo selected. I am grateful for SAMA offering this photo opportunity and for the valuable time and effort the staff and judges expended. I appreciate the diverse and admirable photo works of my fellow photographers. And finally, I am thankful for my two unknown subjects (grandfather & grandson?) for being there while I captured them enjoying amazing gazes on the SA RiverWalk. It was a precious adventure for the three of us.

Wow! This is just about the best birthday present ever!

Many thanks to the museum staff and to the distinguished judges. Hats off to all the "hot" photographers who stepped up to the challenge.

There was one art installation that I relished, but it was impossible to photograph and that was Bill Fontana's sound installation under the Jones Avenue bridge. The following quote is from the San Antonio River Foundation site: "The blend of recorded and live broadcasts from multiple locations along the river creates a sound sculpture that transforms our awareness of the surroundings."

Congratulations to all the winners. Some of you I know and some of you I hope to meet soon.

SAMA Announces Judges and Special Prize for Inaugural Flickr Photography Contest
Museum hosting photographs of new Riverwalk extension

San Antonio – The San Antonio Museum of Art launched a new online community project on June 1 in honor of the opening of the Museum Reach: a photo contest to document the Reach over the summer, using the popular online photo community Flickr. In six short weeks, more than 1,000 entries have been submitted and almost 100 photographers have joined the Flickr group. The contest has been so popular the submission date has been extended to this Sunday, July 19.

After the contest closes, judges David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at SAMA; Mike Adkisson, Art and Architecture Project Manager at the San Antonio River Foundation; and Trish Simonite, photographer and associate professor of art history at Trinity University; will choose 12 photographs from the submissions. The San Antonio Museum of Art will showcase this work in a special exhibition on display Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, 2009.

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic response from the community for both SAMA’s River Landing and the Museum Reach overall. The Flickr contest has been so successful we are already developing the next one, inspired by our upcoming exhibition Culinary Delights, focused on the photography of David Halliday,” said Emily Jones, Deputy Director of the Museum.

Grandpa Howard's car

This is Grandpa Howard's car from the ... late 1940s, I guess.

I have almost 400 other photos of his from the 1940s to the 1960s. He photographed places between Niagara Falls and Mexico City. You can see them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/www_317537_com/sets/72157621676780545/

If you can identify the cars, the cities or the people, please do so by commenting on the photos on my flickr stream.

These photos were given to me on Kodachrome Transparencies (slides, really). Not wanting to do all the scanning and photoshop tweaking myself, I sent them on to www.ScanCafe.com, a fine company that did all the work for me.
